Speaker Presentation
Dr. Jeffery Pierce from the ECU Brody School of Medicine gave an
informative and interactive program on acupuncture. He discussed how
he came into the practice of acupuncture by desiring to offer more than
traditional western medicine could offer his patients with disorders
such as fibromyalgia. He discussed misconceptions about acupuncture and how
few complications result from acupuncture in this country. Unfortunately
insurance coverage is rare, with NC State Employees through Blue Cross/Blue
Shield as one of the few to cover services through an MD only. Currently
coverage is not allowed for use of acupuncture as anesthesia with surgery.
He brought Japanese acupuncture needles for members and guests to try
and explained how to find a commonly used insertion point on the back of
the hand between the thumb and index finger. For more information, members
may contact Dr. Pierce at pierceje@ecu.edu.
